Duke Pearson's 1968 album 'The Right Touch' is rightly considered one of his finest efforts as a leader. Featuring an all-star lineup of horn players, a rock-solid and sympathetic rhythm section, and a brilliant set of Pearson's original compositions and arrangements, this album continues to hold up as an outstanding example of late 1960s hard bop.

By the late 1960s, Pearson had become greatly interested in Brazilian music, with several of his later albums for the Blue Note label focusing exclusively on this style. "My Love Waits" serves as a showcase for the fruits of Pearson's studies, as well as a vehicle for a brilliantly lyrical performance from trumpeter Freddie Hubbard.

Hubbard carries the melody throughout the form, with the rest of the horns providing gentle accompaniment underneath. The volume level should always be kept to a minimum in order to create an appropriately intimate atmosphere. A small, brief swell at measure 28 is the lone exception to this rule.

On the original recording, solo order is Hubbard for a chorus, followed by Pearson for two. The melody is repeated after the final chorus as it was in the beginning. A vamped ending featuring some simple backgrounds from the tenor saxophone and trombone and a Pearson piano solo bring this lovely tune to an appropriate end.

This arrangement is written for septet. An optional guitar part has been included. Chord changes have been included in each part to allow for the solo section to be opened up as much as you wish.
