On the 3rd Floor is a medium tempo alto saxophone feature that alternates between straight-eight groove sections and 5/4 swing sections. The composition is harmonically built around augmented triads, which are the most dissonant of the four triad-types (major, minor, diminished, augmented). They alternate with rather consonant minor 7th chords, which can be rather bluesy. The melody pairs two augmented triads a half step apart. This adds a melodic dissonance to the tune.
