Edition: JAZZ BIG BAND ARRANGEMENT

Description: SWING - MEDIUM DIFFICULT

A colorful, multi-faceted composition commissioned by the Monterey Jazz Festival for the 2006 Next Generation Festival sight reading competition, this medium-up swing chart features unusual phrase lengths, extensive cross-sectional orchestration, chromatic melodic figures, displaced rhythmic motives, and plenty of solo space for tenor, trumpet, trombone, drums and piano/guitar. Following a boisterous, angular opening section, the chart opens up into a 1960's 'Blue Note-esque' melodic small group tune (think Wayne Shorter meets Lyle Lovett), then makes a left turn into a heavily tweaked 24-bar minor blues for solo changes and emerges on the other side with a second line-inspired break before the recap. Brass ranges are moderate throughout, though the chromatic nature of the lines makes the parts challenging enough for even the best high school and college bands. No woodwind doubles. Medium difficult.
