Edition: Jazz Studio Orchestra Arrangement with Vocal

Description: Bossa Nova - Medium

Publisher: Jazz Lines Publications

This arrangement was written by Nelson Riddle for Jobim's 1965 album "The Wonderful World of Antonio Carlos Jobim." This is another beautiful arrangement from this album.

The arrangement begins with a flute trio stating the intro melody accompanied by horns and strings. The pacing should feel relaxed - not rushed or hurried. Riddle had originally written that this intro was to be played by 2 alto saxophones and tenor saxophone - it was changed to flutes for the recording. The vocal enters at bar 9 with a scat melody. The syllable sounds have been included, but the singer should feel to improvise the sounds. Even though Jobim sings this in Portuguese, included are the English lyrics as they work with the melody that Riddle included in his score.

The arrangement features some wonderfully warm background textures in the strings accompanying this catchy and clever tune. You will be singing this melody for days! Dynamic levels should be almost completely kept to a medium-soft level at the most; only some occasional swells in the strings should exceed this intensity. There is a flute trio soli before the vocal returns to close out the arrangement.

The harp part has been cued in the piano part in the event that a harpist is not available.

This arrangement is written for studio orchestra with vocal soloist. This is not a transcription - it has been prepared from Nelson Riddle's original pencil score used for the recording session.
