"I have heard that Gil Evans once said that all he'd do to score this piece would be to orchestrate Horace Silver's piano playing. I had done exactly that (before I had heard that Gil thought the same way about expanding this music), and the results have been reliably spectacular. We play it slightly faster than the original recording (that often happens to familiar pieces of music - they get played faster as we get to know them better), but not so fast that the piece becomes frantic. It is energized enough and practically foolproof."
