Description: Swing - Medium

Publisher: Jazz Lines Publications

We're all familiar with the famous Charlie Parker with Strings recordings that were made in 1949 and the early 1950s. Parker recorded these in the studio and did many live concerts. At first, the reception from the critics wasn't so great. But, over time these recordings have been cherished by jazz fans all over the world. In fact, Parker's recording of Just Friends with strings became his best-selling single. Well, it may surprise you to know that there were several arrangements that were rehearsed for Parker's 1949 Strings studio session that were not recorded. Some of these previously unknown arrangements never saw the light of day again - others were only performed once live by Parker.

This chart was arranged by Jimmy Carroll for the 1949 Charlie Parker with Strings studio session but was not recorded that day most likely due to the length of the arrangement (over four minutes). At this time, all recordings needed to be less than three and a half minutes in duration. However, Parker did perform this chart live on September 26, 1952 at the Rockland Ballroom. This arrangement has the same instrumentation as the others from this session: Solo alto saxophone part, oboe (doubling on English horn), 3 violins, viola, cello, harp, guitar, piano, bass, and drums. For this publication, an alternate oboe part that avoids the English horn double is included.

This publication was based on Jimmy Carroll's pencil score and the set of parts that were created for the 1949 recording session.
