Sousa's stirring march in a rousing, up-tempo big band romp. The chart starts with a jazz march drum intro, leading into the main theme with alternating brass and sax lines. Trumpets have some challenging bop unis counterpoint to the saxes unis statement of the theme. Solos by trumpet and tenor are followed by the famous trombone unis line. Instead of a decelerando, a single drum rim shot introduces the final theme in a half-time jazz march. A rubato ending with an extract from Grand Old Flag provides a subdued finish for this flag-waver.
