Edition: Jazz Studio Orchestra Arrangement with Vocal Duet

Description: Slow Swing - Medium

Publisher: Jazz Lines Publications

In the 1940s Frank Sinatra was featured on radio shows, television programs, and many live dates. This arrangement was most likely written by Axel Stordahl (the original parts exist but the score is missing). Frank Sinatra's radio program Songs by Sinatra originally aired from October 20, 1942 through February 25, 1943. It was 15 minutes long and ran on Tuesday nights on CBS. The show was brought back to CBS on September 12, 1945, airing at 9 p.m. Eastern Time. The 30 minute program had a flexible format that allowed Sinatra and the producers to bring on celebrities of the day as well as other singers with whom Sinatra occasionally sang duets. The show was sponsored by Old Gold cigarettes and featured Axel Stordahl and his orchestra backing Sinatra, The Pied Pipers, and Jane Powell. The run of the show ended on April 23, 1947 when Lorillard & Co, the maker of Old Gold cigarettes, announced that it was not going to continue to sponsor the program.

Sinatra first performed this arrangement on May 15, 1946 in a duet setting with June Hutton. For this performance they cut the eight bar introduction instead opting for an introductory harp arpeggio. Later in the year on October 14 Sinatra performed this as a vocal solo on the Mail Call program (#266) using a four bar introduction. And, the following year on September 1, 1947 Sinatra performed this same arrangement as a vocal duet with Doris Day also on the Mail Call show (#274). This publication presents the complete arrangement with the original eight bar introduction. The arrangement may be used as a vocal solo or duet and cut indications are included so that the full or partial introduction may be used at the discretion of the conductor.

The vocal key is Eb throughout. A 4th trumpet or 3rd trombone parts have been included in the event that a horn in F is not available. However, as this instrument is featured it is suggested that the arrangement be performed with a horn player.

This publication has been based on the original sets of parts used during the various radio broadcasts - this is not a transcription.
