The Average Bear is a great way to introduce your band to music in the style of Count Basie. While the arrangement is not technically difficult, successful performance depends on the band's cohesion and expression. The slow but swingin' tempo requires the performers to balance both patience and intensity. The chart features a simple melody, followed by a bluesy piano solo. The shout section is quiet but filled with tension, propelling the arrangement into the last statement of the melody and an extended ending.
