Also known as “Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory,” and “Glory Hallelujah,” this extremely popular American patriotic song makes a return for your little big band. This ballad treatment is reminiscent of Neal Hefti’s classic arrangements for the Count Basie Orchestra. A moderate lead trumpet range, fully notated bass part, and ample 16-bar blues form solo opportunities in both the tenor sax and optional guitar parts contribute to its accessibility. Flugelhorns are optional and muted shadings add to the orchestration’s color. From a rousing shout chorus emerges a reflective conclusion. With a few improvised solo choruses, “Battle Hymn of the Republic” weighs in at five to six minutes.
