Description: Salsa - Difficult

Featured on the Chronicles CD by John Wasson's Strata Big Band, Señor Salsa is a festive and lighthearted Latin chart with strong ensemble lines featuring every section in the band. Built upon a Songo bass line groove, the chart progresses from a buoyant opening into featured solos by alto sax and trumpet, and then moves to a more subdued ensemble section providing room for the pianist to solo over the groove before opening up to a more substantial piano solo section. Afterwards the drummer and percussionist are given the opportunity to be showcased in a classic call and response percussion battle, and moving into a band breakdown which starts at the bottom and moves up to the entire ensemble; it culminates with a powerful statement of the melody lead by high energy trumpets and ending in a classic statement of the final melodic material. This chart calls for rhythmic independence on the part of every player in the ensemble.
