Blakey, Art and the Jazz Messengers
Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers for decades were not only one of jazz's most popular groups, but were a training ground for young musicians who often went on to stardom. From Lee Morgan and Wayne Shorter to Freddie Hubbard and Cedar Walton to Chuck Mangione and Keith Jarrett to Wynton and Branford Marsalis and so many more, Blakey's groups were a starting point for dozens of future stars and group leaders. Blakey's own professional career started when he was in seventh grade, as a piano player. He switched to drums sometime in the early 1930s. Prior to forming the Jazz Messengers, he worked with Mary Lou Williams, Fletcher Henderson and Billy Eckstine. After the Ecktine band broke up, Blakey spent two years living in Africa studying Islam. When he returned to the United States, he worked with Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Thelonious Monk. In the early 1950s, he formed the Jazz Messengers with Horace Silver and led the band for over 35 years. Through the decades, the Messengers were a “mainstay of straight ahead jazz” (http://artblakey.com/biography/).He was inducted into the DownBeat Jazz Hall of Fame and the Grammy Hall of Fame, and was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award posthumously in 2005.
