Darin, Bobby
Beginning his career as a songwriter, Bobby Darin would eventually become one of the most popular singers of the 1950s and 1960s. His first major hit, 1958's Splish Splash, led to a string of successful singles over the next decade, including Dream Lover, Mack the Knife, and Beyond the Sea. Darrin was awarded the first ever Grammy Award for Best New Artist as well as Record of the Year for Mack the Knife (1960). Darrin's first film, Come September, co-starred his wife, Sandra Dee, and earned him a Golden Globe. He also appeared in several films in the 1960s, even garnering an Academy Award nomination for his role in Captain Newman, MD. Darrin became politically active in the 1960s, and released folk and protest music on his own record label. He remained a popular guest star on television until his death. Suffering from ill health for most of his life, he passed away following open heart surgery in 1973 at the age of just 37. Darrin was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriter's Hall of Fame posthumously, in 1990 and 1999. He also received the 2010 Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
