Forrest, Helen

Born in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Helen Forrest got her start singing in a band led by her brother before being hired by Artie Shaw in 1938. While with Shaw, she became one of the most popular singers of the big band era. After leaving Shaw one year later, she would perform with the orchetra of his most heated rival, Benny Goodman, as well as with the band of Harry James before striking out on a solo career in 1944. Although her popularity began to wane a bit by the end of the 1950s, she continued performing both with big bands and as a supper club act until illness forced her to retire in the early 1990s. She passed away in 1999.
