Please click here to view our most recent Jazz Publishing Newsletter, focusing on the additions of arrangements from Christine Jensen, Florian Ross, and Melba Liston, as well as our significant addition of nearly 2500 PDF charts from Hal Leonard, Alfred, and Kendor/Doug Beach Music. Our next one will feature all that's recently been new in our annual Back to School Newsletter; it is scheduled for August 20th.
AUGUST NOTES: (August 13th Update) Brand new today is the newly re-edited and -engraved Bob Florence arrangement of Stanley Turrentine's Sugar, as written for the Bob Florence Limited Edition. Sugar has become a popular modern standard due to its easy to play, yet deep to explore, melody and harmony. Florence's arrangement takes things at a brisker-than-usual tempo, incorporating lots of counterpoint and revamped harmony to give the now-classic tune a unique revamp.
Also new from our Jazz Lines Publications is Rob McConnell's version of Strike up the Band. The Gershwin Brothers' standard has long been used as a flag-waver for big bands of all styles and generations. That being said, it should come as no surprise that Rob's arrangement manages to turn the time-honored tune inside-out and back again, several times over. It's a demanding blow, both physically and mentally, but one that rewards the effort it will take to put it all together. This was recorded in 1992 and released on the Brassy and Sassy album.
We also have two new entries in our Peggy Lee Series, which will continue to expand in the coming months. Featured is The Man I Love from Nelson Riddle, which has a very interesting backstory regarding Frank Sinatra's involvement; from her autobiograpy: "He was my neighbor then, and came over and said, let's do an album. That was Frank's idea, the whole thing. It was his entire production. He came over with a list of about 40 songs, and they were all excellent songs - gems, you know - and said, Just choose from this. Bill Miller [Sinatra's regular pianist] came over and set all the keys with me. Then Frank hired Nelson Riddle to write those lovely arrangements. And then he had a beautiful orchestra. I thought that album probably would never pay for itself. But I always thought at the time, it doesn't make any difference; this is just so much fun. And Frank did conduct - he was following the score and he knew every note in there. Frank thought of everything to the last detail, including putting menthol in my eyes so I'd have a misty look in the cover photograph." Also new is Billy May's Jingle Bells, with vocal choir.
The latest from our Walrus Music Publishing is Sherisse Rogers's new take on Blue Skies, as written for her Project Uprising.
Also from Whitewater Music, home of Christine Jensen, we introduce a bunch of charts from Joe Sullivan. A prolific composer, Sullivan directs a jazz sextet and The Joe Sullivan Big Band, and has eight albums to his name as a leader. He is an associate professor at the Schulich School of Music at McGill University, where he teaches jazz composition, arranging, and trumpet.
We also have two more from Brandon Moore, whose charts are always thoughtful, unique, and challenging; a great new take on After You've Gone as well as Hummingbird Waltz, which thoroughly transforms a folk tune written by his grandmother.
There are a bunch of new PDFs from Hal Leonard, featuring O Tannenbaum from Michele Fernández, The Jody Grind from Mark Taylor, I Could Write a Book from John Wasson, and more.
Finally, we now have the B flat version of New Standards: 101 Lead Sheets by Women Composers. Compiled and edited by Terri Lynn Carrington, this is an invaluable resource for teachers, musicians, and students everywhere wanting to greatly expand their jazz horizons at the highest levels.
