Description: Blues - Difficult
Publisher: Jazz at Lincoln Center
This is a long, down-home blues from New Orleans Suite (1970) that features the organ playing of Wild Bill Davis. It includes the last solo on record from the irreplaceable Johnny Hodges on alto saxophone. Soloists should pace themselves, and the brass should make their moments count as they play at the climax of the tune (letter K). Be sure to let the first two choruses simmer by swinging on the sock cymbal and following the bass line as is. It makes for a better transition into the 12/8 shuffle at letter C. The drummer should pay attention to the placement of the stick on the head of the snare drum. It's not quite a rimshot, but the stick should be close to the rim to get close to the sound achieved by Rufus Jones. Part of the 2024-25 Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Program.
