Edition: Jazz Big Band Arrangement

Description: Swing - Difficult

Publisher: Toy Piano Publishing

Florian Ross's Broomstick is a modern medium-up swing chart with a 2nd-line vibe (quarter note = 190) that balances accessibility with sophisticated writing. Scored to feature Piano, Tenor 2 and Trombone 3, the piece combines clear melodic content with rhythm section parts that offer substantial interplay, syncopation, and metric layering—ideal for developing ensemble precision and communication. There are some interesting a capella sections towards the end of the piece. Modern melodic swing.

Broomstick is dedicated to Jim McNeely and is stylistically influenced by Keith Jarrett's early piano trio works. The piano intro is a transcribed solo intro by Florian Ross featured on the Quartet recording Reason & Temptation. The piano part is quite demanding.

This piece is best suited for advanced collegiate-level ensembles looking to explore modern swing language with tight ensemble demands and creative interpretive opportunities.
