In June 1984, Mulligan completed his first orchestral composition at the suggestion of his friend, Zubin Mehta, Entente for Baritone Saxophone and Orchestra, and he performed it four times in 1989 with the New York Philharmonic, conducted by Maestro Mehta.
He went on to perform this symphonic work several times over the years with orchestras in London, New York, Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles.
