Edition: Jazz Big Band Arrangement
Description: Swing - Medium Easy
Publisher: Excelcia Music Publishing
Composer Peter Sciaino has captured the essence of the lazy swing ballad with this new chart that puts the spotlight on the whole band. After a short Piano introduction, the ensemble is featured with the brass in cup mutes. This is a terrific chart to work on ensemble blend and rhythmic consistency.Hush is a playful and laid-back jazz chart, written in the style of Count Basie’s timeless classic Lil’ Darlin’. Like its predecessor, this piece exudes a relaxed, smooth sound that encourages a sense of warmth in the context of an easy swing chart. Designed specifically for younger players, this arrangement retains the elegance and charm of Basie’s style while being accessible and engaging for a developing ensemble. Designed to introduce young musicians to the beauty of the Basie swing tradition, “Hush” embodies a sense of ease and cool sophistication giving them the opportunity to experience the nuances of phrasing, rhythm, and ensemble playing thereby providing young players with an accessible entry point into the style.
The composition draws heavily from the signature two-beat swing feel that Basie and his orchestra made famous. The spacious melodies allow room for the band to breathe, thereby providing an opportunity to rehearse ensemble cohesion. In keeping with the Basie style, the brass section often plays an important role in providing both harmonic support, melodic interplay and playful accents under the reed melodies.
The rhythm section, in particular, should aim for a soft but consistent pocket, providing a platform for the horns and reeds to shine without overwhelming the delicate phrasing of the melody. The brass section should be mindful of articulation, avoiding sharp or overly aggressive attacks. The Saxophones, while playing in a supportive role, should bring warmth and clarity to the background harmonies, ensuring that the overall texture remains smooth and inviting.
