Edition: Jazz Big Band Arrangement

Description: Swing - Medium Easy

Publisher: Jazz Lines Publications

Taken from the Kansas City Suite, Benny Carter's Katy Do is a great slow swing arrangement that works wonderfully for bands of all ability levels. It can serve as a great introduction to the Count Basie style for younger students, while more veteran groups will find challenge in executing the chart's dynamic and rhythmic subtleties.

A short, mellow introduction leads into the main tune, whose form is played through twice. The first time features the saxophones in the spotlight on the A sections, with the full band joined together for the bridge. The second chorus is mostly focused on solos - the first two A sections feature muted trumpet, while the bridge features tenor sax. The main melody returns for the final A section, with a brief tag setting up the gentle conclusion.

This publication was based on a revised score and set of parts that Benny Carter put together in 1987; however, it largely follows the original 1960 recording by the Count Basie Orchestra. Benny added a 4th trombone part for the 1987 version but this part is optional.
