Edition: Jazz Big Band Arrangement

Description: Ballad - Advanced

Publisher: Jazz Lines Publications

Originally recorded in Stockholm by the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra (June 1975) and released on Greetings and Salutations (and also in December of that year and released on their 1976 album New Life), Love to One Is One to Love showcases the rich depth of Jones's writing at its finest, with dense harmonies, crisp dynamics, and even some short triple-time figures for variety.

A rubato brass chorale sets the atmosphere, with a short flute solo leading into a slow ballad tempo at measure 6. Jones's flugelhorn carries the melody for most of the first half of the performance, but the spotlight shines on the entire band's efforts. Highlights include an intriguing mix of woodwinds playing a directly complementary role to Jones's melody, and some appropriately dramatic figures in the French horns.

The performance is rocketed into the stratosphere by a rapid-fire ascending diminished figure in the woodwinds leading into measure 34. Jones steps back while the brass roar to life, led by Jon Faddis's powerful lead trumpet work. Lewis digs into a hard backbeat to ramp up the bluesiness of the highly dissonant voicings before retreating to a more subdued approach when Jones returns at measure 42. Outside of the bass, the rhythm section gets to take the rest of the chart off beginning at measure 46, with the horns gently whirling around each other while Jones continues to man center stage. Everything finishes similarly to how it begins, with Jones playing a short cadenza over the final chord.

Note:
The brass chorale at the beginning was transcribed (both 1975 recordings were used as reference material), as Jones's score was missing the four-bar introduction. Most likely this intro was created after he finished the score and was an 'insert' sheet at the recording session. This insert sheet is now considered lost.

With the exception of the four-bar introduction, this publication was prepared from Thad Jones's original pencil score - this is not a transcription.
