Written in tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., this Oliver Nelson composition is more a work of classical music than the commercial styles he is typically associated with. The piece is essentially a theme-and-variation structure on a four bar melodic motif. Nelson manipulates this motif in a variety of clever ways, ranging from swapping up composite meter rhythmic patterns to dramatic and sudden shifts in tempo. While the string ensemble gets most of the attention, Nelson on alto saxophone allows himself some moments where he gets to showcase his lovely tone and sensitive phrasing.
Note: in order for the bass part to be played divisi, two bassists must have low C extensions on their instruments.
This publication was prepared from Oliver Nelson's original pencil score and the set of parts used for the recording session - this is not a transcription.
