The piece kicks off with Trumpet and 5th Trombone (or an optional featured saxophonist) trading solos over a mixed meter vamp and later in the piece, each improvises over different chord progressions. Inspired by Bob Brookmeyer, “New Guy” sheds new light on the concept of dynamic interplay between the drummer and the full ensemble, building to a powerful shout chorus that reaches a climactic peak before melting back into a reduced version of the theme.  Full of unexpected twists and intricate turns, "New Guy" challenges the performers while offering an exciting, unpredictable experience for adventurous listeners.
