Edition: Jazz Big Band Arrangement

Description: Latin - Medium

Publisher: Jazz at Lincoln Center

Due to the unfortunate and sudden passing of alto saxophonist Johnny Hodges days before the Portrait of Sydney Bechet session, Paul Gonsalves assumed the role of the passionate and fiery Sidney Bechet. The two couldn't be anymore different, but Gonsalves's tribute, as well as the spirited ensemble for obvious reasons, makes for a climactic moment in the New Orleans Suite. Before Hodges was known as an all-world alto saxophonist, the native Bostonian was a Bechet connoisseur with the soprano saxophone, even down to the signature vibrato. One may consider playing the solo on soprano sax to give the piece a bit more character.

This is essentially a small group tune inside the big band, and every small group moment should feel exactly like that, even when there are backgrounds. Based on the habanera, the drums play without the snares and without sticks. One must explore the snare drum and toms to find the colors that make give this tune a misterioso appeal.

Part of the 2023 Essentially Ellington Competition.
