Cavanaugh, Dave
Dave Cavanaugh was an American composer, arranger, musician and producer born in 1919. He worked as a session tenor saxophonist early in his career, recording with Eddie Miller, Benny Carter and Woody Herman, as well as Sammy Davis, Jr. and Peggy Lee. In the early 1950s, he became Director of A &R for Capitol Records, where he would remain until his passing in 1981. At Capitol, he arranged and produced for Stan Kenton, Nat King Cole, Peggy Lee, Nancy Wilson, Frank Sinatra and others. His group, Dave Cavanaugh's Music, served as Capitol's house band, providing back up for many Capitol and Capitol Americana Records in the 1940s and 1950s. Cavanaugh recorded under several pseudonyms, including Big Dave, Hank Lentz, and Murray Berlin. He won a Grammy Award in 1959 for his production of Sinatra's Come Dance With Me. His most well-known arranging was for Nat King Cole's Welcome to the Club. He became President of Capitol Records in the 1970s and served as an executive and producer until his sudden death from surgical complications in 1981.
