JUNE NOTES: (June 6th Update)

Here at Jazz Lines Publications we are proud to welcome one of the true first ladies of jazz, Melba Liston, to our arranging catalog. We have two of her charts to begin with: first we have Am I Blue? as written for Gloria Lynne. Lynne's rich, soulful voice was a perfect fit for both the tune and for this moodily intimate arrangement. Her Oasis has a rather interesting history behind it. Originally, it was arranged for a 1957 recording session by the Art Blakey Big Band, but was not released, likely due to the band not being able to put together a take satisfactory to Blakey's standards. It is well-known that Art Blakey could not read music. And, due to the non-traditional nature of this arrangement, Blakey did not have a firm grasp on the form. With rehearsal time at a premium, the band read through one complete take of the arrangement and then put it aside. It did, however, eventually see the light of day on future remastered versions of the session, with some interesting pre- and post-take banter between Liston, Blakey, and other members of the band. We are thrilled to welcome Christine Jensen and Whitewater Music to our catalog and website. One of jazz's brightest and boldest contemporary voices, Christine's music is highly original, as well as intense, beautiful, challenging, and rewarding. We now offer 16 of her arrangements, including a specially-priced set of seven of them (which is customizable on request).

We also have recently welcomed Florian Ross to our roster; please scroll down for more of his arrangements. One of Germany's most versatile and innovative jazz musicians, he is known for his melodic richness and harmonic depth. Florian’s music seamlessly combines intricate, lyrical melodies with sophisticated rhythmic structures. His ability to balance improvisation with composition gives his work a unique dynamic, creating music that is both expressive and intellectually engaging. Florian is particularly skilled at bridging the gap between European and American jazz traditions, blending the improvisational energy of American jazz with the more composed and structured elements of European music, resulting in a sound that feels both innovative and rooted in tradition.

Our Walrus Music Publishing's latest release is Bounced. This Bill Cunliffe arrangement is a highly sophisticated take on Terell Stafford's blues that he recorded with the Airmen of Note. Featuring a disjointed, jerky melody and modal inflected harmony, it's taken at a brisk tempo and is easy to open up for solos. The post-solo section shout chorus is heavy on counterpoint and will require intricate precision to properly execute. 

Announcing the arrival of Alfred Music's 2025 new issues! Alfred's annual new issues are always among the industry's best, and all 16 are right below in June, including new charts from two of today's best, Alan Baylock and Gordon Goodwin, Alan's Proove Your Groove and Gordon's Wise Up.
