Edition: Jazz Big Band Arrangement with Vocal

Description: Swing - Medium Easy

Publisher: Jazz Lines Publications

Tony Bennett's longtime collaborator Marion Evans crafted this arrangement of Just One of Those Things for Bennett's final album, 2021's Love for Sale. It provides a simple, but pleasant setting for Bennett's voice, which still retained its classic sense of pitch and phrasing even at 95 years of age.

A driving introduction from the horns sets the stage for Bennett's first vocal melody, which sees the band being supportive but not overly demonstrative underneath the crooner's lead. That being said, there are a few spots where the brass get short moments to let things rip a bit. Rather than having a traditional post-vocal shout chorus, Evans opts to go with a backgrounds-less guitar solo for half a chorus at measure 73. Bennett returns as the solo concludes, with the overall dynamic between singer and band remaining the same as before. The ending riff is largely copied from the intro, but goes a different way by ending in a major key rather than the rest of the performance's predominantly minor mood. The vocal key is Eb.

This publication was prepared using Marion Evans's original pencil score - this is not a transcription.
