Edition: Jazz Studio Orchestra Arrangement with Vocal

Description: Swing - Difficult

Publisher: Jazz Lines Publications

This Marion Evans arrangement was written for and recorded on crooner Tony Bennett's 1967 album Tony Makes It Happen. The chart does a magnificent job of embracing and supporting the tune's dreamy, whimsical lyrics and song structure in a way that also happens to perfectly suit Bennett's honeyed tenor.

A fluttering of strings segueing into a sharp brass hit serves as a brief introduction for Bennett's entrance with the melody. The ensemble stays out of the way for the most part while Bennett carries the spotlight, but some occasional swinging riffs prevent them from falling into too much of a musical rut. When the band gets their chance to shine at measure 49, however, they make the most of it, with a bold and brassy shout chorus that is clearly inspired by the writing of Nelson Riddle without being a direct replica.

Bennett re-emerges at measure 65, with a similar sense of backgrounds as before. That being said, there is an overall greater sense of urgency present in the performance at this point that should be observed by your musicians. Drummer Sol Gubin provides an intense fill to set up the ending, with the horns getting one more chance to let it rip before tapering back down to a whisper.

This publication was prepared from Marion Evans's pencil score - this is not a transcription. String bowings and slurs supplied by Las Vegas violinist Geri Thompson.
