Edition: Jazz Big Band Arrangement with Vocal
Description: Swing - Medium Difficult
Publisher: Jazz Lines Publications
One of Irving Berlin's better-known hits due to its prominence in pop culture over the years, Ella Fitzgerald covered Puttin' on the Ritz for her Sings the Irving Berlin Songbook album in 1958. Accompanied by a fiery arrangement from Paul Weston, the performance produces a nice contrast between the aggressive ensemble work and Fitzgerald's light vocals.
Beginning with a brass-heavy introduction, Fitzgerald enters at measure 9. The rhythm section should be sure to increase their intensity to match the roaring brass figures that work their way in and around the vocals. Following the melody is a half chorus where the ensemble trades off with an alto sax solo every four bars. Fitzgerald returns at measure 57, leading the rest of the band along until the punchy finale.
This publication was prepared from Paul Weston's pencil score - this is not a transcription. The vocal key is c minor.
