Lawrence, Elliot

Elliot Lawrence was born into a show business family, and was leading his own bands by the time he was 20 years old. Although the band was for all intents and purposes a dance band, Lawrence was open to the modern sounds developing in jazz at the time, and allowed his arrangers, most notably Gerry Mulligan, to experiment, giving his bands a uniquely fresh sound compared to some of his contemporaries.
