December 2025
Dec 9, 2025: We wish to pass on our deepest condolences to the family of jazz legend Gordon Goodwin, who passed away Monday December 8th at the age of 70 in Los Angeles. Gordon's wife shared on Facebook that he passed Monday afternoon surrounded by family, including his mom and children, from complications of pancreatic cancer. Gordon was a giant in today's jazz world, leading great bands, writing many of the best and most popular arrangements of recent years, in demand in Hollywood and the LA recording scene, and casting a giant ray of creativity on whatever projects he took on. Our Walrus Music Publishing humbly publishes some of Gordon's earlier work, and he was always cordial, kind, and thoughtful. We join in celebrating his life and mourning the loss of one of the true greats of jazz in recent decades; his music will continue to be revered around the world, and his arranging skills will be widely studied and emulated as well.

DECEMBER NOTES: Brand new is the first of the 2026 Essentially Ellington series of charts, Daybreak Express. Duke Ellington loved trains; in fact he wrote many of his sketches on trains between gigs. This piece is one of the most original pieces in his extensive library and it's a three minute onomatopoeia. Recorded December 4, 1933 in Chicago. Please keep an eye out for more of these coming soon.
Leading off December is the latest in our Jazz Lines Publications Ella Fitzgerald Series, My Kinda Love. The album Ella Swings Lightly stands out as one of the more uniquely breezy entries in Ella Fitzgerald's discography, no doubt due at least in part to the accompaniment from Marty Paich's Dek-tette. Their take on My Kinda Love possesses a gentle, easygoing atmosphere that is a perfect fit for the tune's melody and lyrics. This publication was prepared from the original set of parts used for the 1958 recording session - this is not a transcription.
We also have the first from our friend Steve Torok. Steve is an award-winning faculty member at MiraCosta College in Oceanside, CA. He teaches saxophone, improvisation, music theory, and history, and directs MOJO (MiraCosta Oceanside Jazz Orchestra) and the Jazz Collective. The incredible list of artists he has performed with includes Stevie Wonder, Usher, The Temptations, Adam Levine, Toni Tennille, Tony Orlando, and Bob Florence, among others. We are proud to present his funky version of Pomp & Circumstance, March No. 1 (Trio Section) by Sir Edward Elgar: "This isn’t your grandma's graduation march! He's taken Elgar's iconic anthem, given it a brass-fueled boost, slapped on some syncopated swagger, and launched it straight into the funk stratosphere. Big band horns, driving grooves, and high-octane energy transform this classic into a celebratory throwdown. It’s regal, it’s rowdy, and it’s ready to groove!"

We also released historic charts from other luminaries. We have Puttin' on the Ritz from Ella and Paul Weston, My Kinda Love from Nat 'King' Cole and Dave Cavanaugh, Violets for Your Furs from Billie Holiday and Ray Ellis, and another from our friend Marion Evans's longtime collaboration with Tony Bennett, Old Devil Moon. Finally, we also released Just You, Just Me in combo and big band versions from Dave Wolpe.
