Edition: Jazz Little Big Band Arrangement with Vocal
Description: Swing - Medium Difficult
Publisher: Jazz Lines Publications
Ella Swings Lightly stands out as one of the more uniquely breezy entries in Ella Fitzgerald's discography, no doubt due at least in part to the accompaniment from Marty Paich's Dek-tette. Their take on My Kinda Love possesses a gentle, easygoing atmosphere that is a perfect fit for the tune's melody and lyrics.
The bluesy introduction involves an alto and trumpet duet weaving around the rest of the band, setting the tone nicely for the beginning of the melody at measure 9. Fitzgerald's vocals reign supreme, with the ensemble forming a politely supportive unit behind her lead. The band does get its chance to shine for half a chorus at measure 41, with some nice dynamic contrasts built in.
Once Fitzgerald re-enters at measure 57, the band's accompaniment is largely copied from before. There is a twist, however, as the key modulates up a half step for the final A section at measure 65. The melody's final tag eventually leads into a deceptively moody finale, with a sudden brief shift to minor offering up a nice surprise.
This arrangement comes with two alternate parts for trumpet and trombone that can be used as a substitute for horn in F.
This publication was prepared from the original set of parts used for the 1958 recording session - this is not a transcription.
