Carter, Benny

Benny Carter's career was truly unique in terms of both accomplishment and longevity. He recorded and performed through eight decades, an achievement which may never be topped. He started off playing with Rex Stewart, Sidney Bechet, Earl Hines, Willie "The Lion" Smith, Fats Waller, and James P. Johnson. He arranged for recordings by Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Lena Horne, Glenn Miller, Gene Krupa, and Tommy Dorsey. He wrote for vocalists Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Billy Eckstine, Pearl Bailey, Ray Charles, Peggy Lee, Lou Rawls, and Louis Armstrong. His big band included Miles Davis, J. J. Johnson, and Max Roach. He wrote standards such as Blues in My Heart and When Lights Are Low. Benny also worked in Hollywood for years and wrote for hit movies and TV shows.

By the latter part of his life, he had been awarded The National Endowment for the Arts' NEA Jazz Masters Award, the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1994, and the National Medal of Arts. Benny was always regarded as a top alto saxophonist, and was an excellent trumpeter as well. He managed to remain at the highest level of jazz for an astonishing 70 years, and his prominence as a player, writer, arranger, and bandleader led his peers to call him King.
