NOVEMBER NOTES: (November 12th Update) Two more historic charts have been released. First off we have Ella Fitzgerald's Puttin' on the Ritz as arranged by Paul Weston. One of Irving Berlin's better-known hits due to its prominence in pop culture over the years, Ella covered this song for her Sings the Irving Berlin Songbook album in 1958. Accompanied by a fiery arrangement from Weston, the performance produces a nice contrast between the aggressive ensemble work and Fitzgerald's light vocals. This publication was prepared from Paul Weston's pencil score - this is not a transcription. The vocal key is c minor.

From Tony Bennett as arranged by our friend Marion Evans is Old Devil Moon. This arrangement was written for and recorded on the crooner's 1967 album Tony Makes It Happen. The chart does a magnificent job of embracing and supporting the tune's dreamy, whimsical lyrics and song structure in a way that also happens to perfectly suit Bennett's honeyed tenor. This publication was prepared from Marion Evans's pencil score - this is not a transcription.

Another is one we are especially thrilled to present, Ella Fitzgerald's swinging version of What Are You Doing New Year's Eve? This lovely chart of the holiday standard was arranged by Frank DeVol for Ella's 1960 album Ella Wishes You a Swinging Christmas. This was arranged to feature a solo vocalist along with a saxophone section (alto sax 1 doubles clarinet), trumpet, trombone, and rhythm section. This is a perfect number for your next holiday concert! This publication was prepared based on Frank DeVol's pencil score and the original set of parts Ella Fitzgerald used for her 1960 recording session - this is not a transcription. 

Also just in time for the holidays is the Glenn Miller Orchestra's version of Silver Bells. Ever since its introduction to the world in the 1951 film The Lemon Drop Kid, Silver Bells has been a holiday favorite. Dave Wolpe's arrangement for the Glenn Miller Orchestra's In the Christmas Mood album maintains the song's classic feel while also giving it a coating of the trademark Miller sound. This publication was prepared from the set of parts used for the recording session - this is not a transcription.

We also have Violets for Your Furs, from Billie Holiday's classic Lady in Satin record. Recorded in 1958 for the final album to be released in her lifetime, Holiday is accompanied by a Ray Ellis arrangement that provides a lush setting for her iconic vocal style. Not overwhelmingly difficult technically, it will provide your singer and ensemble with a formidable musical challenge. While Holiday was near the end of her life and did not still possess all of her physical vocal gifts, the emotion she displays on this record is legendary. This publication was prepared from Ray Ellis's original pencil score - this is not a transcription. The vocal key is Bb.

And we have My Kinda Love from Nat 'King' Cole as arranged by Dave Cavanaugh. An under-performed standard, My Kinda Love features a cozy melody and whimsical lyrics that are a perfect fit for Cole's husky bass. Cavanaugh clearly took note of this when crafting this arrangement, which only dials up the warmth even further. This arrangement was written for Cole's live recording at the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas, NV on January 14, 1960. This publication was prepared from Dave Cavanaugh's pencil scores and the original set of parts used for the live recording - this is not a transcription.
