MARCH NOTES: (March 10th Update) We are thrilled to present four new arrangements from Christine Jensen! These four are the usual highly original contemporary challenges from Christine. They each feature different instruments, with Passing Lions Gate featuring her sister Ingrid Jensen on trumpet. More fantastic work from one of today's true originals.

We also are getting Sierra Music's latest new issues listed--two new ones each already from Patty Darling and Bill Holman, and another great new holiday chart to add to those previously written by Rich DeRosa--along with more brand new PDF charts from Hal Leonard.

Body and Soul served as the closing track on Ella Fitzgerald's 1962 album Ella Swings Gently with Nelson. As the album's title implies, Nelson Riddle's arrangement never reaches an overly dramatic peak, opting instead for a slow build from start to finish that never loses its mellow atmosphere even at its dynamic extremes. This publication was prepared from Nelson Riddle's original pencil score - this is not a transcription. The vocal key is F and there are no saxophone doubles.

Also leading off March is Julie London's studio orchestra version of Body and Soul. Recorded in Los Angeles in 1957 for Liberty Records, this soulful rendition of the classic was arranged by Russ Garcia. Included are optional Bb and Eb instrumental parts that may be used in place of the vocal. So, this can be played similar to a Charlie Parker with Strings arrangement. The vocal key is Eb.

And from longtime Jazz Lines stalwart Benny Carter we have a saxophone ensemble version of--Body and Soul! Coleman Hawkins's transcendent 1939 recording of Body and Soul led to the wistful ballad becoming a rite of passage of sorts for jazz saxophonists, eventually being covered by all manners of rising stars over the years. For his 1962 album Further Definitions, Benny Carter paid tribute to Hawk (who is also heard on this version) by harmonizing the first chorus of his solo in a classic soli fashion. It is highly recommended that your section, if they have not done so already, familiarize themselves with Hawkins's original version in order to understand the appropriate stylistic mannerisms that are required to make this arrangement work. This publication was prepared from Benny Carter's pencil score and the set of parts used for the 1962 recording session - this is not a transcription.
